The Wonderful World Of Scratchboard, Sheryl Unwin 2026-2027

Scratchboard is a fine art form that uses a surface covered with white clay and then a layer of black India ink. In class we will explore the different tools to remove the black ink to bring your image come to life. The student may choose to keep their boards black and white or proceed to colorize them. In class we will explore the different mediums used to colorize your scratchboards.

Let’s draw! The goal is to relax, learn, and enjoy. By understanding and combining simpler underlying forms of anatomy, you can grow and succeed in this challenging but rewarding pursuit. All can benefit from studying the human figure (nude), from beginners to advanced students. Sessions will feature short and extended model poses. Instruction will be tailored to each student’s skill level. We will cover materials, various techniques, measuring, expression, and composition. Classes may include visual presentations and demonstrations. Class fee includes model fee.

    • Bring national talent to the community for exhibits & workshops, such as AWS, Southern Watercolor Society and Oil Painters of America
    • Provide opening art receptions every month that are free and open to the public
    • Add dynamic and relevant visual arts classes and workshops that you ask for like Tim Saternow, David Lobenberg, and other artists
    • Price classes competitively – 20% less on average than other art centers
    • Support the local and growing artist community with training, exhibition space and an outlet for selling their work
    • Offer an Arts & Healing Program Free to all participants
    • Provide scholarships to children in need to art classes – 35 – 50 a year
    • Host a annual exhibit for the Manatee County School District – showcasing the work of over 200 K-12 students
    • Host Free exhibits and classes for emerging artists and non-profit groups like Just For Girls
