Narrative Portrait Painting, Alicia Brown 2026

by

Alicia Brown B-A

Thursday 1:00-4:00pm

In this immersive oil painting class, participants will be guided through the process of developing a narrative from photographic reference. Particpants will explore how story telling, identity and presence can be conveyed through the painted figure. Working from both black and white and color reference photos, students will use the grid method to accurately draw and transfer their drawing onto canvas. Establish value structure using the grisaille wipe-out technique. Develop color using a limitted palette approach. Build dimension and depth by layering paint from thin transparent passages to more opague highlights. Emphasis wil be placed on understanding light, shadow, color mixing, and how personality can be expressed through portraiture. This class is open to beginners and experienced painters.
