The Artists’ Journey Open Juried Show

The Artists’ Journey

Searle & Reid Hodges Galleries

October 29 – November 23, 2024

Every adventure has a story to share.   The artists in this exhibition have shared complex narratives about locations, events, and people.  Many of the artists combined materials in distinct ways in order to encourage viewers to examine their own attachments to specific materials or places.  Some artworks reference an exact moment, while others allude to a state of being in an unexpected place.  There are compositions that tell a story of celebration and others that memorialize those who have passed on.  There are several mysterious and curious narratives that can be found through the placement of objects into surfaces which had a previous purpose and are now part of a new visual experience.  The variety of techniques made jurying the work difficult but I was most impressed with those that pushed their selections of particular objects like feathers, texts, and jewelry into exciting combinations.  Many of the artists processed the materials to suggest symbolic associations in how they constructed focal points and visual pathways.  Visual metaphors have been used throughout the artworks to move colors and textures of objects into formal structures.

Michael Wyshock, Juror

1st Place

Angel In The City, Victoria Kudryavtseva

This piece was selected as first place because of the references to the journey of technology of the human species as well as suggesting hope amongst the threats of industries by the celestial being who is watching over us carefully.   The balance of architecture and light achieved a complex formal structure that allowed the composition to be examined in multiple ways.

2nd Place

Turbulence, Heather Lalanne

This artwork was selected because of how feathers become marks and also create dynamic fluid strikes in the surface. These elements allow the viewer a place to float and drift from one place to another in this intimate surface, instigating the mind to think about moments of place and transitions.

3rd Place

Collage Of Carol’s Creation, Carol Anne Peteani

This artwork was chosen because of how the surface reflects and moves light and how recognizable objects appear first but through their collected mass the familiarity is lost.  The history of where these objects existed before, (such as the watch referencing a time that has passed but is now frozen within these decorative elements) suggests many journeys shared together.

Merit

Comeback, Edward Baldado

This painting deserves recognition because of its scale, energetic colors and textures all contributing to the pose of the figure in a moment of celebration after a lifelong journey of dedication to train, compete and win.

Honorable Mention

Asian Sojurn, Elise Manieri

The mixed media collage was chosen because of how its sections of words, elements of nature, and paint marks merge into new combinations of shapes with other patterns; evolving a poetic shift from reality into a dreamstate where an imaginative journey builds itself.

Honorable Mention

Shelliquary – 2 Relics, Pamela Jones

This sculpture was selected because of how it formats collections of objects into meticulously organized sections within a container; creating a sacred place in which the items can increasingly charge one another to prepare for the journey ahead.

Honorable Mention

More Than Just A Number, Ellen Simon

This fabric artwork has a captivating documentation of sadness but also strength in the unexpected form of a gentle quilt.  The strong symbolism of each stitched object related to the occupations of individuals (such as keys, hangars, and stethoscopes) are juxtaposed against the numbers on each arm to remind us to never forget history no matter how difficult the journey may be.

Exhibition Proposal

If you have an idea for an exhibit that you would like to present, please complete the following form and submit to Herrig Center for the Arts. The proposal should tell us what the physical work is, what the general theme is, and give a sense of scale. We would also like to know what the work communicates to the viewer.

Herrig Center for the Arts has three galleries: Kellogg, Searle and Reid Hodges. The Kellogg is the largest at 58’7″ l x 18’11” w and holds about 45 medium to large pieces. The Searle holds 40-45 medium to large pieces and is 56’6″l x 20’2″w and the Reid Hodgess holds 30-35 pieces and is 66’6″l x 8’1″w. This does not include 3D work, which we have pedestals for. Kellogg is pictured on the left, Serle on the right.

Please make sure images are named as requested to be considered. All files marked with an asterisk are required.

Thank you for your proposal.

Parking at the ArtCenter

Now that construction is underway, our usual parking will no longer be accessible and we ask that everyone park on the first two floors of the River Dance garage just north of our building. We will have a handicap spot and a drop off spot, shown on the diagram below. Please pull all the way into spots. On reception nights, the drop off spot will be a handicap spot. We now have a smooth path from the River Dance parking garage to the back entrance of ACM and it is lighted for evening visitors.

We will help those that require special consideration.

We know change is hard but we hope you’re as excited as we are! We will keep you updated on this page.

September 14, 2023. The ground breaking ceremony held earlier today for the new Herrig Center for the Arts marks a new beginning for Herrig Center for the Arts and our community. The Center has been transforming lives and building community for over 85 years. We are the premier center for art in Manatee County, with significant reach into Sarasota and Pinellas Counties.

Construction on the new 28,000 SF, 2-story facility will begin in mid-November. Architects are Wannemacher Jensen and the builder is Bradenton-based NDC Construction. Completion is scheduled for late 2024. The architects have already received an award for the building design from the Tampa AIA.

The new Center will transform the entrance into Bradenton and provide greenspace that is so important to urban landscapes, as well as offer expanded gallery, classroom, office and storage space.

The ArtCenter will operate uninterrupted in their current facility while the new one is constructed. Once construction is complete, the building will be razed to make room for a community park and sculpture garden that will face 9th St W, creating a beautiful welcoming entrance into Bradenton.

Classes, exhibits, the gift shop and events will continue as scheduled.

We are grateful for the generosity of our donors especially our transformational donors: The Steve & Natalee Herrig Family Foundation, the Bishop Parker Foundation, the Johnson Singer Foundation, the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Bradenton CRA, Johnson PhotoImaging, Bradenton Riverfront Partners, Hatfield Development and the State of Florida. The new Center will meet the growing demand for visual arts classes, exhibits, and other arts programming, well into the future. The new Center will be named Herrig Center for the Arts. The new Center’s address will be 888 Avenue of the Arts (3rd Ave W).

The groundbreaking event featured key community leaders as well as the ArtCenter Executive Director.

The public portion of the Center’s Capital Campaign was announced at the ground breaking. The Bishop Parker Foundation offered a $500,000 Challenge Grant that will match all new donations received up to $500,000. The goal of the public campaign is to raise an additional $5.5 Million.

We invite you to visit the ArtCenter and discover all we have to offer, take a tour or a class, view an exhibit and learn more about our campaign and why the arts are so important in all our lives. You can help make our city a vibrant destination for the arts. Afterall, we’re not doing this for us, we’re doing it for you, our community and the generations that will follow.
