The American Watercolor Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious art societies in the world. Indeed, election to the Society as a Signature Member is one of the most sought-after honors in the painting world. AWS Membership comprises many of the greatest names in painting throughout the Society’s history and includes (to name drop a few) the American impressionist Childe Hassam, regionalists Edward Hopper and Charles Burchfield, plus virtually every member of the important “California School” of watercolorists, and everyone in between, up to and including the late Andrew Wyeth.

AWS’s annual Exhibition is one of the most revered watercolor exhibits in the world. More than 1,200 artists from throughout the United States and 27 foreign countries submit their work to a panel of jurors chosen from Signature Members of the AWS. Of these submissions, 150 paintings are selected for the exhibition. Forty paintings from the show are selected for the Traveling Exhibition.

While inclusion in this exhibition is itself an honor, participants also compete for the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals of Honor, and other awards and medals.

Juror’s Statement Thank you, ArtCenter Manatee, for allowing me the opportunity to visit the Center, which I found to be a delightful and energetic work atmosphere. Evidenced by the number of pieces entered into the exhibition you certainly have a significant body of talented and dedicated artists. As I looked at the work, I could tell there are artist’s that find pure joy in the materials they work in! When walking through the work, I had a laugh, remembered with affection places I’ve been and people I’ve known, skies I’ve seen and on and on … I am always humbled by the role of the juror. And as many have said before, but I can honestly repeat, you should all be proud of your work!

First Place Susan Wiley’s Xs and Os painting of buttery yellow and vibrant orange is a well-executed piece of fun! The colors are deliberate and wise and the subject matter touches most of our sunshine memories described in her layers of delightful paint.

Second Place Linda Duhn’s In Full Bloom is a tapestry of color describing the flowers with rich hues bathed in light. The background residence adds to the depth and dimension in a pleasing yet formal composition.

Third Place Cosette Kosiba’s Neighborhood Palms is simply beautiful in such a grand old Florida way. Golden sunlight and an enchanting play of light and dark make this piece mesmerizing.

Juror: Vicky Randall
Vicky, originally from Nashville, Tennessee and now a South Florida sculptor, has been creating work in fabricated metals and cast bronze for over 40 years. She is well known for her monumental sculptures in stainless steel, and her work is represented in public art installations and over fifty private collections in the US and Germany. Her sculptures have been described as “majestic, lyrical and assertive of the space they occupy.” Reflecting on her artistic process, she says.

“Striving for simplicity, I demand harmony between the landscape and the cityscape with my forms. I use abstractions of steel and light to exemplify my impression of time.”

Artist statement: Current work

Technology has been working its way into our daily lives since the end of World War II. Once a thing relegated to factories and industry, technology has changed our lives for the better…or has it?

What do we lose when we let technology in?

I had the idea for a series of paintings that examine this phenomenon after a simple visit to a grocery store. After my shopping trip, while in the parking lot loading the groceries into the car, I realized that I had gone through the entire shopping experience without having any contact with another human being. I thought, what is going on, and how many other “human experiences” have been compromised due to technological advancements?

In this series you will find many human to human experiences that I feel have been forever altered by the intrusion of technology. I use vintage robots as a metaphor for technology, and vintage situations to demonstrate the general time-period when tech began to take hold.

Although the images may evoke nostalgia or cause you to reminisce if you are of sufficient age, a closer study will reveal the more serious side of the subject. The dwindling of human to human interaction.

Please enjoy “Replaced.”

Florida Finds

An Open, All Media, Juried Exhibition

Exhibit: Oct 10 – Nov 17
Kellogg Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, Oct 12, 5:00-7:00

An open juried show that asked artists to share their favorite Florida find, whether a favorite beach, native creature, local seafood shack, the myriad of natural springs, or a favorite fishing pier.

Juror: Dr Brandy Stark
For the Florida Finds show I wanted to really explore the Florida experience – tourists, history, nature, amazing secret finds, candid images from events. The show provided all of that and more and made it quite a challenge to jury.

First place went to Goldie Tremblay because of the beautiful image of the Ca’ d’Zan.  This building encompasses history, with the Ringling family, tourism, the arts, and can be both very public when the crowds are there and very private when they’re not. I enjoyed the splashes of color that are coming in from the windows, it does have Florida’s water in the background, along with the required umbrella and chairs for relaxing by the bay. It is both intimate from its point of view and easily identifiable to those who live here and have been to the building.

Second place goes to Kathy Simon-McDonald. I greatly appreciate the Hopper reference and it actually made me laugh out loud when I saw it. It’s quite brilliant “bringing” the artist to this area. Florida can also be a very solitary and lonely place sometimes.  Sitting in a 24-hour diner, the only building around that is open, with just a few visitors is intriguing. It shows Florida at night rather than during the day. There’s no beach but it is inner city and of course our cityscapes are becoming well known across the nation.
Third place is Kris Peterson. I appreciated the image of the ArtCenter from the beginning of the jury process. It has very crisp clear lines. I love the blue sky and the contrast of the trees and the greenery. It takes a unique look at the building. It also reminds me of Florida’s past, since the ArtCenter was established in 1955, its present, since the show is here now, and its future of being torn down and replaced with a new building with a park and sculpture garden to meet the growing needs of the people.
The merit award goes to Ann Modrcin. I appreciate that a literal piece of Florida was used with the natural wood. I like the integration of the wood grain modifying the face and how the face conforms to the sometimes jagged edges of the cut. I also wonder what she is looking at and I love that she is serene and yet also contemplating something. I would like to stop and ask her what it is that she’s thinking about.
Best in 3D has to be Gregg Wilkins. Florida is a very unique place because it has one of two Salvador Dali museums in the world. Dali definitely looks surreal here with his handlebar mustache having hands to hold up his glasses, the camel and melted clocks as some of his iconic images, the peanut gallery is hysterical, and one of my very favorite images of his is the oozing eggs that appear in many of his works. Yet, this Dali has freckles, eyelashes, and a unique crew neck shirt. Plus there’s the Howdy Doody glasses, which make me ask ‘why?’.  What is this artist’s subconscious mind manifesting?

Juror Statement: Katie Cundiff

It is always an honor and privilege to serve as juror of awards. I found this show of ArtCenter Manatee’s to be just as much a challenge as any nationally juried show. The diversity in work, mediums, techniques and styles did nothing to make my job easier! There is so much talent here!

The main goal of the artist is to express their ideas, feelings, impressions, or beliefs through the language of art, being the drawing, modeling, coloring, etc., which are parts of speech enabling an artist to express themselves.

When judging art, skillful elements and principles pertaining to the language of art and painting must be observed and considered. Color and Harmony, Tone and Gradation, Light and Shadow, Perspective and Atmosphere, Values, Textures and Qualities, Drawing and Form, and Composition.

All these elements and principles must be considered when judging a work of art. However; for a work of art to stand apart from and above these technical elements, it should also express an idea, a feeling, or an emotion.

The technical skills of an artist are important and necessary, but for a work of art to be a “winner”, it must carry with it a thought, feeling, or emotion that is remembered more than the technical skills of the painter. It must be a painting that will excite and enliven the senses of the viewer, and will be remembered for the uniqueness of its creation.

So, it is with that final thought in mind that I gave awards to those artists whose works were not only superbly executed, but those I will carry in my emotional memory.

Thank you, ArtCenter Manatee, for entrusting me in the arduous task of placing the awards in this exhibition, and to all the incredible artists whose expert work I had the honor to view, and enjoy.

Respectfully “Staying in the Paint,” Katie Dobson Cundiff, OPA • AIS • AWA

First Place – J. Taylor – “Peggy’s Cove #4”
This artist had three paintings that were all beautifully executed in colored pencil, adding to the already difficult task of selecting an overall “winner”. The drawing, composition, and color harmony reflected in this award-winning painting are all spot on. There is a stillness, or quietness about this artists’ work that is intriguing, pulling in the viewer in for a closer look at the subtle textures between the elements of wood, rock, and water and the underlying abstract quality of design.

Second Place – P. Robertson – “Florida Before the Invasion”
I am in awe of the simplicity yet complexity of this work. Every element is given a unique texture and design, with intentional mark-making. The control of the watercolor medium is evident. Strong vertical elements and symmetry of design are broken up with diagonal pathways that lead the viewer beyond the edge of the shoreline to the far horizon.

Third Place – M. Dunn – “There’s a Lesson in This”
The composition, colors, and drawing are expertly painted in oils. Most of the children are engaged with the adults on how to brush their teeth, and then a small child near the center of the group glances over toward an onlooker (of the scene). Three older children also look directly at the viewer, but a child at the far right seems to stare with an expression of mystery and wonder. This not only tells a story, but there is a lesson here!

Merit Award – P. Paris – “Wanna Be Gazers”
This beautifully painted landscape in oils captures the atmosphere of the day and statuesque figure of a bare tree in an otherwise lush and lively scene dotted with architecture and wildlife, expertly guiding the viewer through the painting.

Best of 3D – R. Meredith – “Ebb & Flow”
The intricate details, textures, and scalloping on the edges on this large ceramic bowl are enhanced and the theme echoed with the use of color and variance in the glazing. As the title suggests, one might catch the rhythmical pattern of water as the tide rises and falls.

Honorable Mention – D Devera – “The Gathering”
The abstract and graphic nature of this acrylic painting will grab your attention from across the room. The use of light and color, along with rhythmic movement in the reflections on the water create a lively portrait of these four pelicans, probably waiting a handout from a fisherman’s catch.

Honorable Mention – J. Keeling “Sunlight Through the Sideuyard”
A simple subject is brought to life in this painting. It is only a moment, a glimpse of an ordinary scene, and one that might be easily passed by. This oil painting tells us a story and gives us a glimpse into a more private passage of a garden.

Honorable Mention – S. Kutna – “The Dancers”
The images created in this piece of fused glass are of three dancers. There is a moment captured here of figures that are but caricatures resembling the work of Degas, Lautrec, or Seurat, evoking a mysterious and luminous quality brought out further with the fused glass medium.
