Florida Finds

An Open, All Media, Juried Exhibition

Exhibit: Oct 10 – Nov 17
Kellogg Gallery
Opening Reception: Thursday, Oct 12, 5:00-7:00

An open juried show that asked artists to share their favorite Florida find, whether a favorite beach, native creature, local seafood shack, the myriad of natural springs, or a favorite fishing pier.

Juror: Dr Brandy Stark
For the Florida Finds show I wanted to really explore the Florida experience – tourists, history, nature, amazing secret finds, candid images from events. The show provided all of that and more and made it quite a challenge to jury.

First place went to Goldie Tremblay because of the beautiful image of the Ca’ d’Zan.  This building encompasses history, with the Ringling family, tourism, the arts, and can be both very public when the crowds are there and very private when they’re not. I enjoyed the splashes of color that are coming in from the windows, it does have Florida’s water in the background, along with the required umbrella and chairs for relaxing by the bay. It is both intimate from its point of view and easily identifiable to those who live here and have been to the building.

Second place goes to Kathy Simon-McDonald. I greatly appreciate the Hopper reference and it actually made me laugh out loud when I saw it. It’s quite brilliant “bringing” the artist to this area. Florida can also be a very solitary and lonely place sometimes.  Sitting in a 24-hour diner, the only building around that is open, with just a few visitors is intriguing. It shows Florida at night rather than during the day. There’s no beach but it is inner city and of course our cityscapes are becoming well known across the nation.
Third place is Kris Peterson. I appreciated the image of the ArtCenter from the beginning of the jury process. It has very crisp clear lines. I love the blue sky and the contrast of the trees and the greenery. It takes a unique look at the building. It also reminds me of Florida’s past, since the ArtCenter was established in 1955, its present, since the show is here now, and its future of being torn down and replaced with a new building with a park and sculpture garden to meet the growing needs of the people.
The merit award goes to Ann Modrcin. I appreciate that a literal piece of Florida was used with the natural wood. I like the integration of the wood grain modifying the face and how the face conforms to the sometimes jagged edges of the cut. I also wonder what she is looking at and I love that she is serene and yet also contemplating something. I would like to stop and ask her what it is that she’s thinking about.
Best in 3D has to be Gregg Wilkins. Florida is a very unique place because it has one of two Salvador Dali museums in the world. Dali definitely looks surreal here with his handlebar mustache having hands to hold up his glasses, the camel and melted clocks as some of his iconic images, the peanut gallery is hysterical, and one of my very favorite images of his is the oozing eggs that appear in many of his works. Yet, this Dali has freckles, eyelashes, and a unique crew neck shirt. Plus there’s the Howdy Doody glasses, which make me ask ‘why?’.  What is this artist’s subconscious mind manifesting?

Juror: Cecile Moran
Juror Statement:
What a joy to view the visual impact of the beautiful work in this exhibit! It is a powerful show of fine art. I am honored to be asked to judge this extraordinary work.

The work selected for the exhibit displays a knowledge of color and design, whether presented representationally or in abstract form. When selecting the pieces for the exhibit, my choices were based on: consideration of the color theme, completeness of thought, composition, skill and understanding of the materials used, and a uniqueness that speaks to the creative thinking of the artist. Congratulations to all of the participants for the beautiful work submitted and my wish is that you continue creating.

awards

Thank you to ArtCenter Manatee for inviting me to juror “Animals & More”. ArtCenter Manatee never fails to draw artists with a strong mastery of skills and imagination. When choosing awards I chose first those that addressed the theme, my next criteria were skill and mastery of the media chosen as well as an imaginative view of presenting the theme. It was a very challenging process due to the excellence of the pieces. All work showed the beauty of the animals that the artists chose to portray and our relationship to them. If your work was not included please do not be discouraged. This was a competitive show to jury. Continue to create!
Being an animal artist myself, I was moved by the work and excited to see how our animal friends were depicted by the talented artists.

Juror: Evelyn McCorrister-Peters

“As a painter I derive inspiration from the environment. By depicting its value to others we can continue to cherish what is left of our diverse ecosystems. As an artist I have the opportunity to record these remaining places in a manner distinctive to my experience. This process advances the artistic language of my work as well as expands the conversation and consideration for the wild among my viewers.”

Evelyn is originally from New Jersey and Delaware, and has now lived in the Sarasota/Manatee county area of Florida for over 25 years. She received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Delaware and has also attended The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Ringling College of Art and Design.

In 1984 Evelyn began exploring the world, visiting 48 of the 50 states as a scenic artist with Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus. She now focuses on the educational and conservation efforts of the family business Squalus Inc who is partnering with the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature to establish a critical care center for Manatees.  Evelyn’s travels throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico and Canada along with a year residency in Japan have shown a wide diversity of life and given her the opportunity to share experiences through art.

Evelyn’s work is represented by Art Uptown Gallery in Sarasota, Florida and held in private collections throughout the US, Canada, Australia, France, Spain and the Netherlands. Evelyn has received residencies and fellowships from Weir Farm National Historic Site, Zion National Park, Jentel Foundation, Dorland Mountain Arts Colony and The Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts. She is a member of the Petticoat Painters, one of the oldest, continuously exhibiting women’s art groups in the United States. Evelyn serves   on the governing board of Myakka River State Park with a dedication to bring artists and nature together.

Evelyn shares her 12-acre home Barking Dog Ranch, with her husband Philip, their Boxer Hank, visiting horses, sharks, sea lions and now manatees. Her life is a menagerie of the people, places and happenings of a distinctive south Florida experience.

Juror: Janet Mishner ARTIST STATEMENT
“On and Off the Grid” is a series initially inspired by the perimeters of isolation necessitated by the pandemic and the nature of human need for connection, two conflicting ideas. As the pandemic continues, my interest in grids that represent boundaries and my enjoyment of obliterating them in some way with lines, mark making and shapes, I have continued this series and renamed it from its original “Connection v Isolation.”

I am enjoying this self-imposed “rule” followed by playful subversion. Sometime in my childhood, I enjoyed the mischievousness of doing something “bad” while no one was looking. The grid still represents the boundary (parental limits) while the obliteration is the chance to ignore or rebel against them sometimes. As my mentor, Gladys Goldstein said many times, “Just have fun!”
