Botanical Beauties, Kim Macalister 2026

Tuesdays 1:00-4:00pm

A class featuring flowers of various sorts. Prior to each class, the instructor will create different bouquets and vases from which the students would create drawings and/or paintings from the display. Students could sketch using 8 1/2” x 11” paper as provided by the instructor initially, followed by a more concrete approach using 9” x 14” paper. Students would be encouraged to branch out, utilizing different approaches to explore an array of options.

Narrative Portrait Painting, Alicia Brown 2026

Thursday 1:00-4:00pm

In this immersive oil painting class, participants will be guided through the process of developing a narrative from photographic reference. Particpants will explore how story telling, identity and presence can be conveyed through the painted figure. Working from both black and white and color reference photos, students will use the grid method to accurately draw and transfer their drawing onto canvas. Establish value structure using the grisaille wipe-out technique. Develop color using a limitted palette approach. Build dimension and depth by layering paint from thin transparent passages to more opague highlights. Emphasis wil be placed on understanding light, shadow, color mixing, and how personality can be expressed through portraiture. This class is open to beginners and experienced painters.

Advanced independent study with a twist. In this class, students will expand on existing skills. Focus on craftsmanship and design will be emphasized. Complex and advanced stone setting techniques, fabrication and mechanisms. Learn and expand your skills while developing your creativity. Students must be able to solder independently and have a design skill set. This is a technique based class. Demos’ will be introduced throughout the session. Students are expected to develop their own designs and projects, soldering independently, design skills, stone setting & tool safety.

Slab construction is the easiest and fastest form of hand building for beginners to learn while presenting the more advanced student with a variety of challenges involving aesthetics & scale. This class will cover a variety of building and design techniques, including coils along with the use of a clay extruder that play well with the physical characteristics of clay. Demonstrations will focus on the making of quality utilitarian or sculptural objects. Students will be introduced to numerous glazing techniques that allow them to fully explore colors and effects possible with mid-fire (cone 6 electric). Bring your own tools or purchase a beginners kit at the front desk. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, firing, and in-studio glazing.

Creating on the Wheel, Ted Camp 2025-2026

Wheel throwing attracts students who particularly like symmetrically round objects and challenges them to learn how to control the development of a particular form. The basic steps for throwing will be the focus for beginners, while more advanced students will be challenged by more complex forms and techniques, which will lead to all students achieving success through practice. Whether the focus is on the traditional drinking vessel or the more challenging lidded container, including the tea pot, numerous demonstrations will provide the way to success. Students will also explore the myriad ways to apply glazes to their pieces and experience the difference between mid-fire (cone 6 electric). Bring your own tools or purchase a beginners kit at the front desk or online. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, firing, and in-studio glazing.

This is an independent study, hands on, open to anyone who has experience with clay and has taken a class at Herrig Center for the Arts or Herrig Center for the Arts. This class has no instructor, but there is learning amongst students.  Class fee includes 25lb of clay, bisque and glaze firing.

This class is designed for students who have prior experience with watercolors and want to enhance their painting skills. This class is an excellent opportunity to learn new techniques and refine your artistry. You will actively explore color mixing and blending, create rich textures, and improve your overall artwork. Additionally, you will discover effective strategies for addressing mistakes and revitalizing your pieces, including techniques such as the “sink-dunk” method.
Using your vacation photographs as inspiration, you will create personalized works of art that reflect your unique perspective. Most importantly, this class aims to provide a rewarding and enjoyable experience as you progress in your artistic journey. Participation in discussions and demonstrations is highly encouraged.
