Learn the basics of throwing on the pottery wheel from a full-time elementary school teacher. You will be provided clear instructions, needed intervention, and emotional support as you begin your pottery throwing journey. The curriculum will cover the use of typical tools, getting to know the pottery studio, and everything you need to know about clay centering and basic throwing skills. Come in, sit down. Class is in session!

Enjoy working on the wheel but want to hone your skills? Or maybe you want to make something other than a bowl. This is the class for you. Each class will discuss and demo a new item on the wheel. Your creations might be functional, whimsy or maybe your greatest work of art. Experience potter must be able to throw 1 lb of clay with ease. Class fee includes 25lbs of clay, firing, and in-studio glazes. Please bring tools or purchase a beginner kit at the front desk. Recommendations, do not wear any jewelry, cut nails short, bring a towel and/or apron.

Ceramic Workshop     A

Tuesdays: 1:00 – 4:00

This is an independent study, hands on, open to anyone who has experience with clay and has taken a class at Herrig Center for the Arts or Herrig Center for the Arts. This class has no instructor, but there is learning amongst students.  Class fee includes 25lb of clay, bisque and glaze firing.
*Note: You must have taken at least one session of classes with an instructor before you can register for this class.

Beginner & Intermediate Wheel Throwing     B-I

This class is designed for beginners and intermediates. Learn throwing, trimming, glazing and firing techniques with plenty of one-on-one instruction. You will be shown how to create basic forms as well as more complicated forms such as lidded jars, mugs and teapots. Additional instruction will include how to apply texture to clay to create decorative surfaces. Bring pottery tools or purchase a set of tools from the gift shop. Class fee includes 25lbs of stoneware clay, glazes, in-studio bisque and glaze firing.
