DESCRIPTION:January 3 – January 26\, 2023 \nOpening Reception January 4\, 5:00 – 7:00 pm Heather will do a demonstration during the first half of the opening reception. \nSearle Gallery \nArtist Heather Arenas presents a continuation of her original oil painting body of work “The Museum Series”. Central to The Museum Series is the endearing yellow character “Dot”\, a recurring motif paying homage to her beloved grandmothers. These influential figures played a pivotal role in kindling her artistic passion\, not only by providing her with art supplies but also by exposing her to a diverse range of art forms and instilling a profound appreciation for the old masters. She often features paintings by artists she deeply admires\, presenting them as if exhibited in a museum\, garnering significant attention and admiration from viewers. In the new body of work\, Heather takes “Dot” out to various cafe settings\, while using the same Zorn palette of white\, yellow\, red and black. This choice of colors represents the complexities of the work\, where situations can be perceived as “black and white”\, yet the answers often lie in the gray areas. The artist’s dominant use of yellow in her work symbolizes her belief in the inherent goodness of people and shows her positive outlook and desire to convey optimistic themes throughout her work.

SUMMARY:Expressive Faces In Watercolor With Alicia Farris
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Thursday\, Friday Feb 1\, 2\, 3\, 9:00-3:30 \nAlicia Farris will share her studies of the human face in this three-day watercolor workshop. Using Alicia’s characteristic loose and colorful style\, students will learn techniques to portray not just a likeness\, more importantly\, the personality and emotion of the human face or subject. Students will benefit from demonstrations each day as well as individual and group discussion. This workshop is designed for the painter who has at least a basic command of the watercolor medium\, the serious beginner to the advanced student. Portrait painting is not a prerequisite. Alicia will work with students individually to help them nurture their own artistic journey. \n \nSample photos for the first day will be supplied to all students who register along with the supply list. DESCRIPTION:Advanced Beginner to Advanced\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, Mar 14\, 15\, 16  9:30-4:00 \nWhat’s not to love about painting animals — especially when it involves humor and imagination?!! This workshop is just plain fun\, beginning with brainstorming ideas and numerous\, short exercises. You’ll see how one creative step leads to another and another until you have a host of animals eager to be painted in out-of-the-ordinary ways. In addition to the creative aspect\, you can count on Robin’s seasoned teaching skills for thorough explanations and demonstrations of watercolor techniques. By working small (8×10’ish) students will have time to create several pieces and Robin will show ways to creatively mount or frame finished pieces. She also reproduces her work on everything from pillows to notecards and will explain the process. \n \nThis workshop is a great springboard for developing creative approaches to your work\, regardless of the subject. There will be time for interaction and painting throughout our three sessions. Robin demonstrates in watercolor but students may use acrylic and gouache. Let the fun begin!

DESCRIPTION:Kellogg Gallery \nFounded in 1897 when women journalists were not permitted to join male-only professional organizations. The League became an organization for writers\, artists and composers\, giving them an avenue for recognition of their talents. With now over 1600 members in 81 branches\, Sarasota Pen Women is a branch of the National League of American Pen Women. We are artists\, authors\, and composers.  The artists are a diverse group: painters in oil\, acrylic\, watercolor\, pastel\, mixed media\, sculptors in various media\, glass artist\, etc.  We also have artists who illustrate books authored by some of our writers.  Members work in landscape\, still life\, figurative and collage. \nClosing Reception: October 25\, 4:30-6:30 pm
