Asian brush painting seeks to find simplicity of form and vitality in a subject, capturing the essence of a scene. Bold, spontaneous brush marks and delicate fine strokes combine in a mindful dance creating delightful artworks. In this immersive oil painting class, participants will be guided through the process of developing a narrative from photographic reference. Particpants will explore how story telling, identity and presence can be conveyed through the painted figure. Working from both black and white and color reference photos, students will use the grid method to accurately draw and transfer their drawing onto canvas. Establish value structure using the grisaille wipe-out technique. Develop color using a limitted palette approach. Build dimension and depth by layering paint from thin transparent passages to more opague highlights. Emphasis wil be placed on understanding light, shadow, color mixing, and how personality can be expressed through portraiture. This class is open to beginners and experienced painters.

Collage painting is an exciting means of storytelling! In this class we will explore techniques for creating handmade collage papers using mark making, stenciling and the gel plate. In addition, we will use acrylic mediums to create clear image transfers. With colorful acrylics, mediums, brushes and papers in hand, we will paint, cut and glue to build several abstract collage artworks on paper and canvas, bearing in mind the principles of composition as we create. Finishing layers will be added to the artworks with pencils, acrylic markers, 3-D paints or artist crayons.

A sewing/quilting no pattern project that can be hand or machined stitched. Each person will design their own project with help or guidance from me. The finished look can be hung, laid over the back of a chair, used as a table runner or used anywhere that needs a little charge of color. This a very fun, rewarding experience. We start by picking a fabric focal point to establish a theme and colors. A $55.00 class fee payable to the instructor at the first class includes fabrics, batting, backing, yarns, strings, fusor, ironing board & iron access, and in process demos. In fairness to all, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated during camp for any reason. We reserve the right to ask a parent/guardian to remove their child from Herrig Center without benefit of a refund or monies paid for any/all camp sessions.

Personal items such as music devices, cell phones, etc. are not permitted in class.

Using previously developed construction skills, students will produce either hand-built or wheel-thrown work and apply special glazes to their bisque-fired work PRIOR to each class. During class, those pieces will be fired quickly and students will then remove their work from the hot kiln while the glazes are still molten. They will then place their work into smoking chambers where the glazes will develop a serendipitous variety of surface and colored effects unique only to raku while rapidly cooling. In addition to regular raku glazing, students are encouraged to try naked raku, obvara, and horse-hair techniques as alternative choices to glazing for their surface patterns. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.

Advanced independent study with a twist. In this class, students will expand on existing skills. Focus on craftsmanship and design will be emphasized. Complex and advanced stone setting techniques, fabrication and mechanisms. Learn and expand your skills while developing your creativity. Slab construction is the easiest and fastest form of hand building for beginners to learn while presenting the more advanced student with a variety of challenges involving aesthetics & scale. This class will cover a variety of building and design techniques, including coils along with the use of a clay extruder that play well with the physical characteristics of clay. Demonstrations will focus on the making of quality utilitarian or sculptural objects. Students will be introduced to numerous glazing techniques that allow them to fully explore colors and effects possible with mid-fire (cone 6 electric). Wheel throwing attracts students who particularly like symmetrically round objects and challenges them to learn how to control the development of a particular form. The basic steps for throwing will be the focus for beginners, while more advanced students will be challenged by more complex forms and techniques, which will lead to all students achieving success through practice. Whether the focus is on the traditional drinking vessel or the more challenging lidded container, including the tea pot, numerous demonstrations will provide the way to success. This ring will literally roll right onto your finger and no, it is not just for the married folk! You will learn how to precisely size, cut, file, solder and polish the three bands that once completed will be fun to wear and garner lots of compliments. The rings consist of sterling, gold-filled and rose gold-filled wire. You will complete your ring in this one-day workshop. Consistently painting from life is where real growth happens. This intermediate–advanced class
is for students who already have a foundation in drawing and color mixing and are ready to
challenge their seeing and decision-making.

Working from live observation, we’ll paint a range of subjects—from simple to complex still lifes,
to interior and exterior views seen through the studio windows. Painting from life sharpens our
understanding of value, color, shape, and spatial relationships in a way nothing else can.

As you learn to respond directly to what’s in front of you, you’ll develop skills that strengthen

Painting from your “Minds Eye” is painting with ideas, shapes, colors and concepts that come to your imagination at any time of day or night. I promote a creative environment where artists are inspired by each member of the class as we begin each day with a class review of current work as I critique and provide helpful comments. Students should have an open mind and look forward to new and exciting painting avenues while learning to create paintings and collage papers. You will build a personal library of creative collage materials while exploring the basics of abstract development through practical lessons. This is an ongoing weekly class with the development of individual skills as we explore: Mixed Media, Acrylic Mediums, Gels, Pastes, Color development and the Importance of Multi-Layer Underpainting and the “Lot to a Little” design concept.

In fairness to all, disruptive behavior will not be tolerated during camp for any reason. We reserve the right to ask a parent/guardian to remove their child from Herrig Center without benefit of a refund or monies paid for any/all camp sessions.

If enrolled in aftercare, pick up time is no later than 5:00pm.

Personal items such as music devices, cell phones, etc. are not permitted in class.

*Aftercare is available from 3:00-5:00 for $15 each hour or portion of an hour and must be paid in advance.  Please call Herrig Center to make accommodations: 941-746-2862

Children MUST BE picked up by 5pm.

2026 Scholarship Application
Scholarships cannot be processed without the most recent Federal Income Tax forms showing Total Household Income. Please block out Social Security Numbers.

Please add your child's name to the "Student Name / Notes" on the checkout page.

There are no refunds for class cancellations & funds may not be transferred to a different class or session.

There are no makeup classes.

Staff & instructors at Herrig Center will not be responsible for administering over-the-counter or prescription drugs to students.
