To create a more dynamic and fluid representation of a running creek, waterfall, or crashing waves, it's essential to incorporate a blend of soft and hard edges along the waters contours. Experiment by twisting or dragging your brush along the edges to mimic the natural flow of water. Vary your brush's speed and direction, allowing it to glide or whip across the canvas surface to capture the lively movement of the water. This piece is a month-long acrylic study that explores the vibrant beauty of a cascading waterfall, a meandering river, and the rhythmic dance of the ocean.

Supply List

Using previously developed construction skills, students will produce either hand-built or wheel-thrown work and apply special glazes to their bisque-fired work PRIOR to each class. During class, those pieces will be fired quickly and students will then remove their work from the hot kiln while the glazes are still molten. They will then place their work into smoking chambers where the glazes will develop a serendipitous variety of surface and colored effects unique only to raku while rapidly cooling. In addition to regular raku glazing, students are encouraged to try naked raku, obvara, and horse-hair techniques as alternative choices to glazing for their surface patterns. Class fee includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing.

This class covers basic techniques of palette knife application. Other steps along the way include different strokes for varied application, texturing and layering. Classes start with a critique period to help the student direct their focus for the day based on good design principles. This type of painting can create thick, interesting textures and patterns that are not possible with a brush. We watch for those "happy accidents" that create such excitement.

Jump right into metalsmithing even if you are a beginner. Make a beautiful spinner ring creating a wide band that allows smaller rings to spin around on the outside. Learn to sharpen your metalsmithing skills with measuring, cutting, soldering, forging and polishing your piece. You will complete a ring in this one-day workshop. Slab construction is the easiest and fastest form of hand building for beginners to learn while presenting the more advanced student with a variety of challenges involving aesthetics & scale. This class will cover a variety of building and design techniques, including coils along with the use of a clay extruder that play well with the physical characteristics of clay. Demonstrations will focus on the making of quality utilitarian or sculptural objects. Students will be introduced to numerous glazing techniques that allow them to fully explore colors and effects possible with mid-fire (cone 6 electric). Thursdays, 1:00-4:00

This course explores the chemical constituents of glazes in non-technical ways and would interest any student who is interested in making their own glazes. Knowing what a chemical contributes to the glaze formula is critical in choosing chemicals that provide the surface or color a student is looking for. Another important area of concern for students making functional glazes is that the glaze needs to be food-safe and durable in its use. Students will receive a special computer glaze calculator, which will help them to see when a glaze is properly fluxed to produce a durable surface and will help them to know what it will look like before the glaze is made. Students will test their own glazes (for cone 6 electric or raku) and adjust them to produce desired results on test tiles. Time will be spent applying test glazes to test tiles, and not constructing work. No clay will therefore be provided to the student as part of the class fee and no supply list is required.

Painting mountains is all about creating greater depth in your artwork. You will learn about how to use color temperature (warm and cool) as well as the various types of edges to create that feeling. Since mountains are panoramic views, cut your paper more horizontal to enhance that feeling. You will create a sample painting in the first class. From there you can create your own landscape image from your photo references.

Consistently painting from life is where real growth happens. This intermediate–advanced class
is for students who already have a foundation in drawing and color mixing and are ready to
challenge their seeing and decision-making.

Working from live observation, we’ll paint a range of subjects—from simple to complex still lifes,
to interior and exterior views seen through the studio windows. Painting from life sharpens our
understanding of value, color, shape, and spatial relationships in a way nothing else can.

As you learn to respond directly to what’s in front of you, you’ll develop skills that strengthen
every painting you make—whether working from life or translating that knowledge into work

Zendoodle is a fun and unique way of scribbling cool artistic expressions.  It is a meditative, free-form art form that uses repetitive patterns, lines, and shapes to promote relaxation, mindfulness, and creativity.  In this class we will create designs with black pens in a wood cube and other wood objects to make decorative projects to bring home!  Guaranteed to be a day full of fun!  Creative ideas are welcome! This class is for the beginner to intermediate student who wants to expand creativity and skills. Students must feel confident enough to solder on their own, or with little assistance. In this class we will move away from beginner projects and start to expand your skill set into more complex designs and techniques. Focus will be on earrings and pendants, craftsmanship and finishing will be emphasized. Complex soldering techniques, fabrication, stone setting, texturing, and forming will be introduced. Tips for creative problem solving will be discussed. New techniques and original projects will be shown each session. Students must know studio safety. Limited supplies can be purchased in class.

Unleash your creativity in this vibrant, hands-on class where students will create fantastical dragonflies using paper mache, wire armature and dazzling embellishments. Inspired by nature and imagination, you'll sculpt and paint your own shimmering dragonfly, bringing it to life with colorful wings, metallic paints and bling. Not only fun, this call is for anyone who loves to create something beautiful and totally unique. This is a 5-week workshop. Please supply your own scissors, wire cutters and glue guns. different tubes of paint actually behave, and how to use them intentionally. You’ll learn to see
color relationships more clearly, mix with confidence, and understand why some mixtures sing
while others fall flat.

We’ll cover value control, color temperature, and practical palette management—how to
organize your colors and make thoughtful decisions about which tubes to pull for each subject.

Students will be introduced to an assortment of unique findings that move away from the basic jump ring. Charcoal casting will be introduced as a method for making small charms. We will learn/review preparing the clay, centering, pulling and shaping. Depending on your level of skill, we will get into some ways of turning your pot into a work of art with altering, carving, adding slip, texturing, etc…  Class fee includes 25lbs. of clay, firing and in-studio glazes. Painting from your “Minds Eye” is painting with ideas, shapes, colors and concepts that come to your imagination at any time of day or night. I promote a creative environment where artists are inspired by each member of the class as we begin each day with a class review of current work as I critique and provide helpful comments. Students should have an open mind and look forward to new and exciting painting avenues while learning to create paintings and collage papers. You will build a personal library of creative collage materials while exploring the basics of abstract development through practical lessons. This is an ongoing weekly class with the development of individual skills as we explore: Mixed Media, Acrylic Mediums, Gels, Pastes, Color development and the Importance of Multi-Layer Underpainting and the “Lot to a Little” design concept.
